STORMING THE POINT
A Novel of U.S. Marines On Peleliu
Dick Camp
On September 15, 1944, the 1st Marine Division stormed the heavily defended Japanese island stronghold of Peleliu in the Southwest Pacific. King Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, was assigned to capture “The Point,” a spit of land that jutted out on the extreme left flank of the landing beach. The Point’s defenders, a reinforced company of elite Japanese soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Regiment, enfiladed the beach and had to be eliminated. The Imperial soldiers were entrenched in concrete pillboxes mounting heavy caliber anti-boat guns and machine gun emplacements protected by scores of riflemen in carefully camouflaged trenches. King Company captured and held “The Point” for two days of unbelievably brutal combat, losing nearly 70 percent of its men . . . 172 out of 250. Storming the Point is a wildly engaging fictional account of King Company’s September 15–16, 1944, assault and defense of “The Point.”
Storming the Point A Novel of US Marines On Peleliu edition by Dick Camp Literature Fiction eBooks
Powerful short novel about a pivotal action in an oft neglected battle . The author doesnt attempt to add page length by lengthy biographies of the characters which I think is a brilliant decision relying on the power of the action to speak for itself. The story is told from both sides - US and Japanese Marines which again I think both brings power to the story illustrating the bravery and honest terror experienced by the combatants. The author brings you into the battle and the intensity is portrayed from beginning to end.
The author is a combat veteran Marine officer and I think he writes with a directness that holds the reader.
He is a novelist and an historian . I highly recommend all of his books.

Storming the Point A Novel of US Marines On Peleliu edition by Dick Camp Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Dick Camp does it again. As in his earlier novels, his strong foundation as a military historian and combat Marine speaks loudly from every page. With an easy familiarity with the subject, he weaves the story of the Marines on Peleliu via a pulse-pounding narrative style. It is very easy to get caught up in this page-turner, and I found myself unable to put this book down. And while the book is billed as a novel, students of history familiar with the battle, and with the personalities within the 1st Marine Division on Peleliu will find much comfort within his prose. Though, anyone with an interest in the no-holds-barred, bare knuckle combat of WWII in Pacific or the human element of war, so deftly captured by Dick Camp - as only one who has fought with and commanded men in battle could do. His charcters are richly drawn, ringing with a realism drawn from deep familiarity with his subject matter. Dick Camp succeeds where so many others have failed - by creating characters replete with personality and whom you quickly become enmeshed - with whom you empathise as they fight, sweat and bleed their way to their objectives, all set upon a rich tapestry drawn from one of the bloodiest, and most controversial, battles in American history. I can only hope that Dick Camp continues to gift us with these gems in between his serious work as a Military Historian.
The Pacific War has become more and more interesting to me. The Peleliu battle is as vicious as any. Great fictional account of a real battle for the point.
